Who Wants to be a Millionaire?… or Maybe Tax Plan Like One

I’m wondering how many people saw — “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” recently on TV? No — I’m not talking about the game show — I’m talking about the NFL draft.

While those top draft picks had their family, friends, and agents with them — I hope they had a good tax accountant because they just went from being college students – athletes that have no income, or at least none that the IRS knows about (can anyone say… college football booster cash payments!)

Anyway, in one night they went from no income and not having to file an income tax return, to being millionaires and being in the top tax bracket of 35%.

Now, a good tax accountant will put together strategies to lower their taxes.
For example, since the top tax rate may be almost 40% in 2013 instead of the 35% rate it is now, these new football millionaires may want to structure their contract to get more of their 2013 salary up front in a bigger signing bonus paid this year, in 2012, in order to pay less tax!

So hey there Mr. Luck, RG 3, or even Detroit Lion first round pick Riley Reef – call me, Lyn Ford – and we can talk football and money saving tax strategy. Because the worse kind of tax trouble (for anyone) is PAYING TOO MUCH TAX TO THE IRS.

The important thing for you, the reader of this blog, to remember is that you don’t have to be a millionaire athlete in order to benefit from income tax saving strategies. What you have in common with millionaires is that no matter how much money you earn, there may be ways to SHIFT your income and your tax deductions from one LESS favorable tax rate period to another MORE favorable tax rate period.

IRS tax saving strategies.

Maybe a good tax accountant should be everyone’s number one draft pick -/ns

Richard Hatch and Kawme Kilpatrick Two Sides of the Same Counterfeit Coin (And They’re BOTH Out of Ciculation!)

BLOG REWIND (from the Spring of 2011) **Currently, Mr. Hatch remains in jail while Mr. Kilpatrick is out of jail – for now**

They just don’t get it.

Recent news stories reported that former Survivor TV show star Richard Hatch is headed to jail for the second time for his lying and deceitful income tax evasion – related to failing to file his tax returns. And disgraced former Detroit Mayor Kawme Kilpatrick is in jail for the second time but recently said from his jail cell that if he had to do it all over again he would still lie about having an affair with his former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty to “protect his family”.

Hmmm Kawme… I wonder if you were thinking about protecting your family when you were exposing them to humiliation and public ridicule while you were directing your Chief of Staff about the responsibilities of her position while working “under” you.

Comon’ Kawme. Isn’t lying and being deceitful about not having enough money to pay his restitution to Detroit what got you thrown into the slammer to begin with?

For Hatch wasn’t the three years he already spent behind bars enough for him? Maybe he thinks jail is the best place to make full use of his manipulative and deceitful “Survivor” TV show winning skills to – well – survive.

Jail means confinement, isolation, not enough bad food, not wearing your own familiar clothes, exercise in an outdoor yard, close (too close?) “companionship” with others there for the same defiant reasons he’s there – hmmm…. sounds a lot like the Survivor TV show. Didn’t that show go off the air?

Maybe someone should tell Hatch that his jail sentence is no reality show — and there’s no million dollar prize for him to win – and NOT pay taxes on.

But as we all know – and Richard, if you didn’t know – NOW you know – the jailhouse is NOT the set of a reality TV show. And Kwame, in the jailhouse, you no longer have an opportunity to continue to manipulate people and abuse the power of your office.

There’s no get out of jail free card and you cannot pass go and collect $200. Your monopoly on second chances — is well — Game Over.

Lying and deceit – try to fool the public once – shame on both of you – try to fool the public twice – shame on both of you — again /ns

Comments from “Innocent Spouse” Book Author Carol Ross Joynt on New Spouse IRS Rules

NOTE: Listen to the PODCAST of Lyn’s interview with Carol Ross Joynt, the author of the book “Innocent Spouse”, Joynt was charged with multi-million dollar IRS tax fraud – shockingly discovered after the sudden death of her husband! To listen to the June 11th and June 18th 2011 podcasts – go to the BOTTOM of the radio show page of taxtroublehelp.com or use this link http://taxtroublehelp.com/radio-show/

Carol Ross Joynt’s statement on the new IRS innocent spouse rules:

The IRS Monday changed its rules to make it a little easier for women and men who seek innocent spouse tax relief. They dropped the rule that required filing within two years. People familiar with the code –both inside and outside the IRS — considered the time limit unduly stringent. Innocent spouse cases typically are messy. It can take years for the fraud to emerge and the spouse left “holding the bag” to get their legal case organized. I was fortunate. I knew within two weeks of my husband’s death, but my case was relatively clear cut. Howard committed a crime that was routine in the restaurant business and fairly transparent.

Since publication of my memoir, “Innocent Spouse,” I hear daily from people who want to file for innocent spouse relief. Mostly women but also men. Their stories are harrowing, often making mine pale in comparison. Some are married to people who committed elaborate schemes and cons. Some are married to people who are in jail. Some have been physically abused and are afraid to seek a defense. Each and every one of them is scared and trying to figure it out, or did get it figured out and are trying to put their lives back together. So, this is a big day for a lot of those individuals.

Two-Year Limit No Longer Applies to Many Innocent Spouse Requests

NOTE: Listen to the PODCAST of Lyn’s comments on this story! To listen to the July 31st 2011 podcast – go to the BOTTOM of the radio show page of taxtroublehelp.com or use this link http://taxtroublehelp.com/radio-show/

July 25, 2011
WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that it will extend help to more innocent spouses by eliminating the two-year time limit that now applies to certain relief requests.
“In recent months, it became clear to me that we need to make significant changes involving innocent spouse relief,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “This change is a dramatic step to improve our process to make it fairer for an important group of taxpayers. We know these are difficult situations for people to face, and today’s change will help innocent spouses victimized in the past, present and the future.”

The IRS launched a thorough review of the equitable relief provisions of the innocent spouse program earlier this year. Policy and program changes with respect to that review will become fully operational in the fall and additional guidance will be forthcoming.

Congress and the IRS Rescue Flyers “Taken for a Ride” by Unauthorized Ticket Tax – An IRS Refund You Didn’t Expect?

NOTE: Listen to the PODCAST of Lyn’s comments on this story! To listen to the July 31st 2011 podcast – go to the BOTTOM of the radio show page of taxtroublehelp.com or use this link http://taxtroublehelp.com/radio-show/

Since Congress has not approved the budget for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as of midnight on Friday, July 22, 2011, airlines are not authorized to collect ticket taxes from customers who purchase tickets. Many airlines however, have increased fares to make up for the difference. Apparently, it’s not illegal for them to do so, but that decision has angered many members of Congress.

If someone paid for tickets on or before July 22, 2011, for travel beginning on or after July 23, 2011, you may be entitled to a refund of ticket taxes paid. The IRS has asked the airlines to provide refunds. Passengers who are not able to get refunds from the airlines can submit a claim to the IRS. Contact the IRS for more information (800) 829-1040.
